Six suites, one courtyard
We have six suites, and all of them share one courtyard. You come in through the moon door off our cobblestone street at Jesús 17, and behind the colonial facade the house opens up: a secret garden of lemon trees, a spacious living room, and pools with a jacuzzi set beneath a double Chichimeca staircase. Pedro Friedeberg's surreal motifs turn up on the walls as you walk through.
There's no lobby crowd here and no long corridor of doors. With six suites, the courtyard rarely feels like more than a handful of people sharing a garden. We keep it quiet on purpose. We welcome guests aged 12 and over, and we ask everyone to keep their phones on silent so the courtyard stays the way it is.
You're always welcome in the courtyard.
Which suite to choose if the courtyard is the point
If you want to wake up and step straight into the garden, choose the Cóatl Suite. If you want to look at the courtyard from inside, choose the Alma. If the pool is what you came for, the Genesis Suite looks over it. Here is how the six compare on what we have on record:
| Suite | Size | What it looks onto | Fireplace |
|---|---|---|---|
| Master Suite | 779.52 sq ft, our largest | Garden view | Yes |
| Genesis Suite | 679.52 sq ft | Pool view | No |
| Cóatl Suite | 513.11 sq ft | Ground floor, direct access to the zen interior gardens | Yes |
| Alma Suite | Floor-to-ceiling windows onto the courtyard gardens | Yes | |
| Ollín Suite | No | ||
| Aura Suite | Upper floor, views of the main square and the Parroquia | No |
Every suite has 24-hour air conditioning. Three have a fireplace (the Master, Alma and Cóatl), which matters more than you'd think: San Miguel evenings get cool.
The suites, one by one
Cóatl Suite. This is the ground-floor suite, with direct access to our zen interior gardens, high wood-beamed ceilings and an antique soaking tub. It's the one for people who want the garden a few steps from the bed, and the fireplace makes it a good winter choice.
Alma Suite. The most ornate of the six. Floor-to-ceiling windows face the courtyard gardens, and Pedro Friedeberg's Aztec monkey reliefs crown the fireplace. If you came to San Miguel for the art as much as the town, start here.
Genesis Suite. Inspired by Diego Rivera's Anahuacalli Museum, with dramatic arches of local stone and a Mixteca-inspired bath. It has the pool view, so the courtyard is the first thing you see in the morning.
Master Suite. Our largest, at 779.52 square feet, with a garden view. There's a cozy living room, a black-and-white mid-century bedroom under a brick vaulted ceiling, a corner fireplace and a granite tub. It suits a longer stay, when you want room to spread out.
Ollín Suite. Inspired by the Aztec idea of Nahui Ollin, movement and life force. The centerpiece is a Roman soaking tub.
Aura Suite. The one that looks outward rather than in. It's on an upper floor, with views of San Miguel's main square and the Parroquia, and a Pedro Friedeberg mural of its own. Choose it if you'd rather watch the town than the garden.
A day around the courtyard
Mornings start with breakfast. A continental breakfast is included with every stay, and in good weather it's served out on the terrace. Afternoons belong to the pools and the jacuzzi under the staircase. If you'd like a massage or a facial, we don't have a spa, but we arrange treatments in your suite on request.
We don't have a restaurant either, and we don't pretend otherwise. Our concierge keeps a handpicked list of San Miguel's partner restaurants and will book your table. Ask in the afternoon and walk out the moon door at dinnertime. The courtyard is lovely this time of evening, with the lanterns lit on the stairs, so plenty of people come back for a last half hour by the pool.
The Voyage Within is our experiences program, and it can fill the rest of your days if you want it to. It runs in five streams: Nurture (wellness), Explore (nature and adventure), Create (culture and art), Connect (community) and Savor (gastronomy).
Know before you book
A few things are worth knowing before you choose a suite:
- Stairs: For structural reasons there are no elevators in the house, and San Miguel's colonial streets are hilly with plenty of steps. If stairs are hard for you, ask us about the Cóatl Suite on the ground floor.
- Check-in and check-out: Check-in is at 3:00 pm and check-out at 12:00 pm. Depending on occupancy, we can offer a complimentary late check-out until 1:00 pm. Arriving early? We'll store your luggage and you can wait in the courtyard.
- Children and pets: Children 12 and older are welcome. Pets are welcome too, up to two per room at 25 kg each, with a USD $90 fee per pet, per stay.
- Taxes and fees: Rates are quoted in U.S. dollars and carry a 21% hospitality tax plus a destination fee of USD $40 per night.
- Payment: We're a cash-free hotel and take all major credit cards.
Where we are
We're at Jesús 17 in Zona Centro, on a private cobblestone street in the historic center of San Miguel de Allende, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Aura Suite's windows face the main square and the Parroquia. Guanajuato Capital is about an hour away and Dolores Hidalgo about 30 minutes, if you want a day out.
Getting here, we recommend our SUV transfer partner: about 1h20 from Querétaro, 1h40 from Bajío and 3h30 from Mexico City. Let's arrange that for you when you book.
Take your time, there's no rush here.
